SSC: safe, sane and consensual.
Safe: hurt does not become harm in the sense of permanent scars, physical or emotional damage. Sane: the ideal that participants in BDSM activities have basic emotional balance. Consensual: the bottom as at least implicitly given permission for what is done to him or her. Consent may need to be renegotiated over time as limits change or become clearer.
Safety and sanity are subjective, best understood as guideposts that vary from person to person.
Some people feel that SSC takes the edge out of S&M. Others prefer RACK.
